But what motivates any child to learn? John Keller produced the ARCS pedagogical model based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory. Jump Ahead uses ARCS – attention, relevance, confidence, satisfaction –  to motivate learners.




  • Attention: students enjoy games, variety, visuals and problem-solving
  • Relevance: activities are related to student interests
  • Confidence: exercises in activities are sequence in increasing difficulty
  • Satisfaction: students receive immediate feedback checking their work against solutions
